Tell the EPA to strengthen rules against coal waste

Issue

Coal waste regulations

Background

“It’s heartbreaking to think that they would dump this coal waste in neighborhoods and near schools and playgrounds. I know that this is not the best we can do. We have to make better choices and change the way we get energy and provide jobs for workers. People say, “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it!” Well, this is definitely broken, and it needs fixing.”

-Jessica Deis, Jefferson County KFTC member

To whom it may concern,

As a Kentuckian the issue of coal ash disposal is very important to me – one of the largest volumes of coal ash and one of the highest numbers of impoundments in the nation are housed in my state.

I support the comments submitted by the Kentuckians For The Commonwealth and think that coal ash should be regulated as a hazardous substance, under RCRA Subtitle C. Further, EPA should strengthen the proposed Subtitle C regulations by outlining strict guidelines and safety standards for coal ash re-use and prohibiting the practice of injecting ash into deep mines.

I also request that EPA refuse to grant Kentucky enforcement power over these regulations. If that is not possible, EPA should engage in strong oversight after regulations are adopted to make sure they are being enforced here.

Thank you for your attention to this long-ignored public health issue.
